But wait! There are 48 mountains listed on the AMC's New Hampshire 4000 Footers list. How is it that you've now found 71? Simple ---- I use a different selection criteria!
To be a NH 4000 Footer a peak must rise 200 feet above it's connecting ridge. If you drop that limit to 100 feet the list expands.
A little background: I finished climbing the 48 4000 footers in the fall of 2012. During this past winter I decided I wanted to continue hiking so I began looking for a new list. There are a lot of them, but none fit just what I wanted. Then I found Eric Savage's NH T3000 list, and things began to fall in place. Eric used the 100 foot "bump up" rule, plus he only listed peaks with trails to their summits (hence the T designation.) Then he included everything down to 3000 feet. This makes for a lot of peaks! But one number jumped out at me. Right at the line between the 4000 and 3000 footers was the number 71. 71 peaks were higher than 4000 feet. I turned 71 years old last year. Finally, a coincidence that fit!
That "fit" includes the realization that I am most at home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Maine, Vermont and the Adirondacks are nice, but I know my heart is here. I also get the most enjoyment out of higher peaks. Climbing through scrub into the alpine zone is, for me, like stepping into another world. And then there is the consideration that at my age, hiking alone most of the time, it's probably smart to stay on trails rather then attempt many bushwhacks. It should be less stressful for my family, with whom I leave detailed trip plans.
So, thank you Eric. I've modified your list to come up with one that I'm happy to call my new "Quest" -------- The 71 NH T4000 >71 List.
My "score" updated to Aug. 26th, 2013 is below. (I reached age 71 on June 25th 2012.)
All
NH T4000 Peaks --- 71 after age 71
